I think the best part of this job is being the bearer of good news and the bringer of sweet deals (okay the best part of this job is that I get to play video games and call it “work”). But it does feel great to share our excitement & hard work with you – like the cool in-game ring the guys at Funcom built exclusively for us and is included with EVERY Age of Conan Keyset! And how about the nice offer from J!NX to buy some spiffy new clothes for less than a month’s subscription to WOW? Movie Review!
By Kindness aka Biz Dev Guy (aka the bitter Ideazon "only plays Halo" guy)

And now, completely unrelated to anything gaming....a MOVIE REVIEW of Harold and KUMAR Escape from Guantanamo Bay

If you see only 1 movie this year... see "The Dark Knight". But if you decide to see 2 movies, then also see "Indiana Jones". However if you are one of those MMO gamers that actually gets off your ass and out of your high back desk chair long enough to shutdown World of Warcraft to actually make it to a third movie in a year, then go see Harold and Kumar - Escape from Guantanamo Bay. It's not as brilliant or vibrant as a 3 hour quest in Outlands, but it provides a great escape from the reality and rigours of the WORLD...of Warcraft.

(Hey why the MMO/WOW hate? What did us WOW gamers ever do to you?? Maybe you just can't handle a game that requires thought, coordination and strategy....after all, how hard can it be to run people over in a warthog??..... Note to self, don't let this guy write anymore stuff for the newsletter - Orwyn)

Console Game ‘Exclusives’ - Why PC gamers might have to get used to them

With the release of GTA 4 for the Xbox 360 & PS3, I’m reminded of playing the original GTA on Windows 95, only for PC. Now with ‘exclusives’ such as this, not only does new IP more often take precedence on console, but even established series are starting to loose their place on PC. Any console fanboy will be more then happy to tell you how wonderful it is that a popular game coming out will only (or initially) be released on their favorite console. It will run, look, play better then any other system it might be released on, especially PC. With the release of games like Halo I & II or GTA III & San Andreas, their PC versions lagged behind coming out a year or two later. Games that make complete sense to have on PC are stuck in limbo until the powers that be decide to let them through the gates. So what’s the malfunction? Why is PC taking second (or third) place to console?

There are some bitter truths as to why things are going (and will continue) along this path. Major game titles on consoles are a surefire way to help sell new systems. It forces you to either cave and shell out the cash for the console of choice or wait it out… maybe indefinitely, as some great games never actually make it to PC. Then there are the developers, who seem to be letting things go this way. What is making them lean towards consoles besides pushing systems may you ask? Well, put yourself in their shoes for a few minute. After thinking about it, some obvious reasons why they are focusing on consoles instead of PC:

  • It is less costly to focus on a single platform then releasing multiplatform at launch
  • They get to focus more on the game itself rather then stressing to get their engine running smoothly on (an inconceivable amount of configurations for) the PC
  • With downloadable content on consoles, they no long have to QA their games as heavily, and offer patches as they would PC gamers in the past
  • The ability to offer internet multiplayer in a more controlled environment then on PC, thereby having to spending less time protecting against cheating
  • There is a lower amount of piracy in console gaming, as sales figures show how strong they outsell their PC counter parts when release simultaneously, bringing in more money overall

Thinking about piracy really stuck a note with me. While software piracy does exist on consoles, piracy on PCs has long been common place. I’m going to take a wild guess and say this is the biggest part of the equation for the PC being left in the dust. As much as PC gamers would all like to believe they should be on equal terms with consoles, if it isn’t as profitable in the long run, companies won’t go after it, something we have to get used to. A new interview with the President of Crytek @ PC Play, the makers of Crysis which was a recent PC exclusive, confirms how piracy is pushing them away from the PC headlining their future games.
